Kansas City Chiefs waive Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan, keep Tyler Bray as third QB

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs made 22 roster moves on Saturday, trimming their roster to 54 players. The Chiefs have a roster exemption for recently signed safety Eric Berry, allowing them to keep 54 players. Here's a closer look at the final moves:

Most significant move: Tyler Bray made the roster as the third quarterback, instead of Aaron Murray or rookie Kevin Hogan. Bray was the best of the bunch during training camp and the preseason, and the Chiefs believe he has the most potential. Murray eliminated himself from roster contention with a preseason that included three fumbles and three interceptions. The Chiefs will likely sign Hogan to their practice squad if he passes through waivers unclaimed by another team. The Chiefs have stuck with Bray, who joined the Chiefs as an undrafted rookie in 2013, for three seasons even though he hasn't taken a regular-season snap. The Chiefs think so highly of Bray they once gave him a contract extension and a raise before his old contract was up, a highly unusual move for a player who had never played in a game.

Most significant non-move: The Chiefs kept Knile Davis as a fourth running back. That's an unusual move, given that the Chiefs demoted Davis last year below both Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West on the depth chart. But it could signal concern that Jamaal Charles won't be ready to play when the regular season begins. Charles' return from last season's torn ACL has been slower than scheduled. He didn't play at all in the preseason, and on Friday coach Andy Reid said he wasn't sure Charles would play in the season opener on Sept. 11. West is also returning from an injured elbow that kept him out of the final three preseason games, though he will be available when the regular season begins.

Young at cornerback: In trading fourth-year player Marcus Cooper to the Arizona Cardinals, the Chiefs sent away their most experienced cornerback in terms of years of experience. The Chiefs kept six cornerbacks, but D.J. White and KeiVarae Russell are rookies, and Marcus Peters and Steven Nelson are beginning their second seasons. Phillip Gaines and Kenneth Acker, each entering his third season, are the senior members at cornerback. Peters has started the most games, all 16 last year and both in the playoffs. The Chiefs lost a lot of cornerback experience during the offseason when veteran Sean Smith signed as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders.

De'Anthony Thomas makes the roster: Thomas' roster spot seemed in jeopardy when the Chiefs drafted Tyreek Hill, another small but fast player who is a skilled kick return specialist. But the Chiefs kept both players. Hill is more of an outside receiver and Thomas a slot receiver. It will be interesting to see whether the Chiefs use both in the lineup at the same time, and whether they can be effective if they do.

Roster moves: Traded WR Rod Streater to San Francisco 49ers, CB Cooper to Arizona Cardinals. Released LB Tyrell Adams, WR Da'Ron Brown, CB Deveron Carr, S Jamell Fleming, OL Reid Fragel, WR Frankie Hammond Jr., QB Hogan, Jeron Johnson, DL David King, LB Andy Mulumba, OL Daniel Munyer, QB Murray, TE Brian Parker, OL Jarrod Pughsley, S Shak Randolph, RB Darrin Reaves, LB Terrance Smith, DL Jimmy Staten, OT Zach Sterup, S Brock Vereen.
