Bucs' injury situation paints murky picture heading into Carolina

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver DeSean Jackson and defensive end Robert Ayers will be out against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday, the latest players in a sudden rash of injuries for the Bucs.

Jackson suffered an ankle injury early against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football, left the game and attempted to come back before leaving the game in a walking boot and on crutches. Ayers left the game with a stinger in his left shoulder.

A total of 10 players left the game with an injury. Neither Ayers nor Jackson participated in practice all week. Tight end Cameron Brate (hip/knee), linebacker Lavonte David (hamstring) and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (bicep) were all limited in practice this week, with David and McCoy missing Monday night.

Rookie Chris Godwin will make his second start of the season after stepping in for Mike Evans in Week 10 and notching five catches for 68 receiving yards. Ryan Russell, who has started five games this year, is expected to start in Ayers' spot.

Second-year cornerback Ryan Smith, who has been regularly lining up on the outside since Week 7, is doubtful with an ankle injury. The Bucs also put fellow cornerback and 2016 first-round draft pick Vernon Hargreaves on injured reserve this week with a hamstring injury.

Robert McClain will likely vacate his nickel spot and start on the outside opposite Brent Grimes, with Javien Elliott stepping in at nickel.

Other players placed on injured reserve this week, who all suffered injuries Monday night, were safety Justin Evans, tight end O.J. Howard, offensive guard J.R. Sweezy and backup linebacker Adarius Glanton.

Just how bad is the Bucs' injury situation right now? The Bucs will be without at least eight starters on offense and defense, and possibly more if McCoy, David and/or Brate sit out. That doesn't paint a pretty picture as the team still vies for its first divisional win of the season.
