Each competitor must execute two lifts -- snatch and clean and jerk, in that sequence -- with a maximum of three attempts in each.
Competitors are divided according to weight classes, and in each category, the athlete requesting the lowest weight lifts first. The barbell is placed horizontally on the platform and is loaded in progression. The automatic progression after any successful attempt by the same athlete is 1kg while the weight on the barbell remains unchanged following an unsuccessful attempt. An athlete can increase or decrease the weight for the next attempt by notifying the officials and the athlete's card mentioning the entry must be signed either by the athlete or a team official. Every athlete is allocated one minute between the calling out of his/her name and the start of the attempt with a warning signal at the end of 30 seconds.
What is snatch?
It is the action of lifting the barbell from the floor to an overhead position in one single motion. The lifter should hold up the barbell, steady and motionless above the head with fully extended arms and legs and feet in line with the plane of the trunk until the judges' signal.

And clean and jerk?
It is a two-part lift in which athletes first lift the barbell in one motion from the floor to a point of rest, usually at the level of the shoulders, or what is called Clean, and remain motionless. In the Jerk, the barbell is then lifted above the head to the full extent of the arms in one motion and lifters typically drop into a 'split' position or bend their legs while the bar is rising. The lifter lowers the barbell following the judges' signal after having held it overhead motionless.
How do the judges officiate it then?
Three referees judge each lift and hit the white button to signal a successful lift, while an unsuccessful/invalid lift is indicated by a red light. No part of the lifter apart from bottom of the feet is allowed to touch the platform, neither is bending and extending elbows during recovery or finishing with a press-out permitted -- if this happens, judges deem the attempt as a 'no lift'. For each athlete, the total weight lifted in snatch is added to the total weight lifted in the clean and jerk and the lifter with the highest combined total wins. In the event of a tie, the lifter with the lesser body weight is adjudged winner.
