Toro Rosso face stewards after failed deflection test for Daniil Kvyat

The stewards are conducting an investigation into the legality of Daniil Kvyat's Toro Rosso after it failed a front floor deflection test following qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The cars are subject to deflection tests on various parts of the bodywork after sessions to ensure the design is not flexing beyond the limitations put in place in the technical regulations.

"The vertical deflection under a vertical load of 4000 Newton exceeded 5mm," FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer said. "As this is not in compliance with Article 3.17.5 I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration."

Kvyat, who qualified ninth but will start eighth when Kimi Raikkonen's gearbox penalty is applied, believes he damaged his car on one of the kerbs at the Swimming Pool.

"It was all good, a very good start, a very bad end. I don't know why. I was on for a very good lap in the last part, maybe P5, but I think I hit the kerb really hard at Turn 14 - the Swimming Pool - and I think something broke. The last three corners I was just a passenger, I just couldn't turn, so I lost a lot of lap time there and unfortunately it ended up being a s--- lap.

"I didn't speak with the engineers, I need to speak with the engineers. First conclusions, but it's only my theory. Just the kerb ... the second one. I don't know, something went completely wrong through there. We had big potential but when we come to Q3 we are just losing our concentration, we are losing our pace. When people keep improving we make a step back and then we need to catch up again, so it's something that we need to improve together, the whole team."

The damage and the failed test may be unrelated, but if accident damage caused the test failure then Kvyat is unlikely to face any penalty. Kvyat believes a better grid position was possible without the damage.
