Jenson Button: Engine failure cost McLaren points in Canada

Jenson Button thinks he could have finished in the points were it not for his early retirement during the Canadian Grand Prix.

Button pulled over on the back straight nine laps into the race while behind McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso, with the pair just outside the points. After saving fuel in the opening laps Button felt he would have been in a good position to break into the top ten in the closing stages.

"I think I was in 11th place, saving fuel behind my team mate," Button said. "It's always like that when you are in a good position and saving fuel that you don't finish... It's a shame as we could have got some points today, but I didn't get to see what we could do.."

Button said the failure was down to an old engine being pushed one race too far rather than a reliability issue for Honda.

Explaining what happened, he said: "The engine just went pop, as I was coming out of the hairpin. I told the team I was losing power, looked in the mirrors and saw all the smoke and sparks, so I understood quickly and I stopped. The engine was still running, so I turned it off.

"This is the engine we had been using for the last few races, so we may have pushed it a bit too far. I don't think reliability was an issue, we just pushed it a bit too much this time."
