MONZA, Italy -- Kimi Raikkonen thinks Ferrari's engine upgrade is a step in "the right direction" after putting it through its paces during Friday practice.

Ferrari has spent its three remaining engine development tokens on an upgrade this weekend, meaning Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel have the best specificiation the team will have in 2016. Raikkonen is expecting to see gains from the power unit and says the development has followed a logical path.

"It is pretty small steps and we wouldn't put anything in the car that wouldn't improve our performance," Raikkonen said after FP2. "It's just a normal progress, we try to improve all the areas and that's one of them. It's a small thing but it's the right direction."

Ferrari arrives at its home race in Monza still waiting to record its first win of 2016. Friday practice rarely paints a complete picture of what to expect later in the weekend and after finishing fourth fastest, Raikkonen believes there is plenty for Ferrari to find ahead of qualifying.

"I think the first practice was pretty good, the second one less good, with new tyres and yellow flags and stuff like that. Overall it was not too bad, the car was feeling pretty OK. There's things to improve, always, but it started pretty OK."
