Jenson Button disqualified from triathlon... for speeding

Former F1 champion Jenson Button is showing no signs of slowing down in his time away from the race track -- in fact, his need for speed landed him in a spot of trouble at the weekend.

Competing in an Ironman in California on April 1, which features a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile cycle and a half marathon (13.3 miles), Button appeared to have qualified for the Triathlon World Championships by finishing third. However, the 2009 world champion, who stepped away from his McLaren drive last year to become a team ambassador, has now revealed there was a surprise waiting for him at the finish line.

Rather than being led to the podium, Button discovered he had failed to slow sufficiently in one of the cycling courses go-slow zones, meaning his race time was deleted completely.

"Well that was a pretty interesting 70.3 Ironman," he wrote on Instagram. "I finished third in age group so qualified for the world champs only to be disqualified for speeding in a go-slow zone. Ah well onto the next one!"

Button has been a keen triathlete for several years and founded the Jenson Button Trust triathlon, an annual UK race which raises thousands of pounds for charity every year.
