The trade deadline has come and gone, meaning most significant prospects will remain with their organizations for the duration of the season. For both pretenders and contenders, it is getting close to the time when top prospects will get some time in big leagues so they can either boost the current club or offer a peek into the future.
For the remaining weeks of the season, the top 10 will be a free-flowing list, with names cycling in and out as call-ups are made and needs are created and subsequently met. Here are the players that kick off the race to finish line.
Henry Owens, LHP Boston Red Sox
Current Level: Triple-A (Pawtucket) 2015 Stats: 3-8, 3.16 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 56 BB, 103 K, 122 1/3 IP (21 GS) Last Week: (NR)
Progress Report: Prospects Eduardo Rodriguez and Brian Johnson have each spent time in the Red Sox rotation, and with Rick Porcello ailing, Boston is looking once again to the farm, announcing Owens as the club's starter on Tuesday against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. The progression has taken longer than some had hoped, but Owens, the owner of a solid fastball and plus change up, has seemingly turned a corner in his development. After walking 36 batters in his first 11 starts for Pawtucket, he has handed out just 18 free passes over his last 10 appearances.
