The failure to convert a penalty stroke cost India dear as they lost 2-1 to Ireland to finish eighth at the Women's Hockey World League Semi-Finals in Johannesburg on Saturday.

India got off to a strong start and took the lead in the 15th minute when Gurjit Kaur converted a penalty corner with a well-executed flick.

Soon, they got another opportunity to increase their lead. In the 24th minute, Ireland keeper Ayeisha McFerran was sent away with a yellow card for 10 minutes for obstructing Navjot Kaur. India were awarded a penalty stroke but failed to score with Ireland's standby goalkeeper Grace O'Flanagan making a good save.

Ireland levelled the score in the fourth quarter with a clinical variation in their penalty corner attempt that saw Kathryn Mullan finding a perfect deflection to put it past Indian goalkeeper Savita in the 47th minute. And in the very next minute, Lizzie Colvin converted a penalty corner to give Ireland the lead -- which they hung on to till the end.
