Boateng moved upstairs as Azraai Khor takes over as Kelantan coach

Former English Premier League midfielder George Boateng has been moved upstairs in a reshuffle at Kelantan FA that sees Mohd Azraai Khor take over coaching duties in the Malaysia Super League (MSL).

Boateng has been redesignated as senior head coach and technical director after the Red Warriors' stuttering start to the season with two wins, a draw and two losses to sit in seventh spot in the 12-team league.

Former Aston Villa and Netherlands' midfielder Boateng, who joined Kelantan last season, will take on an advisory role as well as oversee the training and development of coaches at all levels.

62-year-old Azraai led Kedah to back-to-back treble wins in 2006-07 and 2007-08. He was positive about his team's chances to win silverware this season.

"Kelantan have a strong squad with a mix of good foreign and national players," he told The Star. "But they are not consistent. It was the same scenario when I joined Negri Sembilan and guided them to their third Malaysia Cup title in 2011.

"I hope I can motivate Kelantan players the same way. I'm familiar with them as some of them used to play for me, so it'll be easier for me to work with the team."

After the visit to Terengganu on April 4, Azraai's next task would be another away assignment -- the FA Cup quarterfinal against Sime Darby, with the first leg in Kuala Lumpur on April 7.

The new coach said that the focus would be as much on winning the FA Cup as on embarking on a good run in the MSL.

"My target for this season is to win a trophy and finish in the top four of the league," said Azraai. "I think we have a good chance of winning the FA Cup as we are in the quarterfinals."

39-year-old Boateng, who earned four full Dutch caps, had a season with Terangganu based T-Team in 2013 as a player before turning his hand to coaching.
