Juventus have been given permission by Schalke to discuss terms with Julian Draxler, although the two clubs have yet to agree on a fee.
Bild reports that Juve sporting director Fabio Paratici was in Germany on Tuesday, meeting with Draxler's agent in Berlin.
"Juventus made a written request to be allowed to negotiate with Julian's agent, and we have agreed to it," Schalke general manager Horst Heldt told Bild. "We have not yet received an actual offer from Turin, though."
Agreement over a fee should follow once the Bianconeri finalises terms of the contract with the 21-year-old midfielder.
Draxler's contract with Schalke runs until the summer of 2018 but a buyout clause of €45.5 million is thought to have expired on July 1. Bild believes Juventus will offer €25m for the player but the Bundesliga club will not consider selling for less than €35m.
The Germany international is likely to fill the void in Juve's squad left by the departure of Arturo Vidal to Bayern Munich, with that transfer reportedly in the final stages. Juve are expected to earn €37m from that deal, and Schalke are keen to see as much of that as possible.
Arsenal have also been linked with the attacking midfielder, although Juve now appear to be in pole position and he would join Sami Khedira, Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala and Neto as summer reinforcements.
Italy defender Daniele Rugani has also joined and he was officially presented to the media on Tuesday.
"It was an easy choice to come here," the 20-year-old told a news conference. "I want to play my card and repay the faith shown in me by Juve. The club want to blood many young players this year and we'll give it the best we can with our enthusiasm. We're ready to make our contribution.
"I dreamt of playing in the Champions League since I was a kid, and now I've got this opportunity."
