Dieter Hecking signs Wolfsburg contract extension until 2018

Wolfsburg have extended the contract of their head coach Dieter Hecking by two years until 2018.

Hecking, 50, has been rewarded for guiding the club to the DFB-Pokal title last season and victory over Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup earlier this month.

The former Nurnberg and Hannover coach has been with the club since January 2013 and guided them to 11th, fifth and second in his three seasons at the helm.

"I've always emphasised my desire to remain with Wolfsburg beyond 2016 and how I feel I enjoy the total faith from the bosses here in Wolfsburg, and I would like to express my thanks for that," said Hecking in a press release.

Hecking was recently named the Bundesliga's Coach of the Year, with his side's midfielder Kevin De Bruyne winning the players' prize, for guiding Wolfsburg to their best season since winning the Bundesliga in 2009.

The Lower Saxony club are now hoping for sustained success under Hecking.

"I'm delighted we are able to continue going along the path we have been following together in years to come," said Wolfsburg's director of sport Klaus Allofs.

"With his footballing philosophy and his way of working, Dieter Hecking fits in perfectly here at Wolfsburg. We still have plenty of objectives to aim for with him as our coach.

"We want to further the very good performances of our team last season so that we can establish ourselves finally and firmly among the top clubs."

Wolfsburg will return to the Champions League this season and will be one of the clubs most will want to avoid out of pot four of the seeds.
