ASUNCION, Paraguay -- Alejandro Dominguez of Paraguay has been elected president of the governing body of South American football.
Dominguez was the only candidate and received all 10 votes from the 10 CONMEBOL member federations. Wilmar Valdez of Uruguay withdrew his candidacy before the voting began.

Dominguez steps into the position after the last three presidents were arrested in the sweeping corruption scandal surrounding FIFA.
"My biggest promise is to restore credibility to CONMEBOL," the 44-year-old told the confederation members. "We want to emphasize transparency. We want to return to the essence of football, the values and the fair play."
The last president, Juan Angel Napout of Paraguay, has been extradited to the United States, while Eugenio Figueredo of Uruguay faces charges in his own country and Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay is under house arrest.
