Newcastle's Daryl Janmaat targeted by West Ham and Watford - sources

West Ham United and Watford are interested in Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat, sources close to the North East club have told ESPN FC.

Janmaat, 26, started the Magpies' opening two fixtures of the Championship campaign but has not featured in their last two, something that has not gone unnoticed by the Premier League duo.

Both are looking to bolster their defensive options before the close of the transfer window and they have identified Janmaat as a target.

Watford boss Walter Mazzarri has been searching for a new right wing-back all summer to fit into his new formation at Vicarage Road.

And right-back has been a problematic position for the Hammers too, with Michail Antonio being forced to play there rather than his preferred position of right wing, while Sam Byram has struggled to hold down a place in the side since his arrival from Leeds United last January.

Janmaat started Newcastle's opening two games of the season, but the Dutchman has not featured in Newcastle's last two Championship victories and the club could be willing to sell him for the right price.

Janmaat joined Newcastle from Feyenoord in the summer of 2014 and he made 32 appearances for the club last season as they suffered relegation from the Premier League.
