Sergio Araujo likely to leave Las Palmas - president Ramirez

Las Palmas president Miguel Angel Ramirez has announced that striker Sergio Araujo is expected to leave the club later this week.

Marca reported that Araujo, 24, will join Greek side AEK Athens on loan until the end of the season.

The Argentine has also been linked with a move to China, but Ramirez told Las Palmas' official website: "There are no offers from China. We have teams in Europe that are willing to pay the player's wages and in the coming days he could leave. Araujo needs to leave this place."

Under contract with Las Palmas until June 2020, Araujo has been under scrutiny after reports on Jan. 18 that he had been charged with drink-driving less than 10 weeks after being sentenced to nine months in prison for refusing to undergo a breathalyser test.

Araujo has made just five La Liga starts for Las Palmas this season, scoring twice and setting up another goal in 11 league appearances overall.

It is a far cry from Araujo's first campaign at the club. He spent the 2014-15 season on loan with Las Palmas from Boca Juniors and scored 24 goals in 43 appearances to help them win promotion to Spain's top flight, before joining the club permanently in the summer of 2015.

"We have to be grateful to him because he is part of the golden history of this club," Ramirez said of Araujo.

Las Palmas are currently 11th in La Liga with 25 points at the halfway stage of the campaign.
