A remarkable day in Indian football that will live on forever, maybe not for the right reasons.
Sunil Chhetri's extra-time free-kick goal in the first knockout match of the ISL season resulted in a furious response by coach Ivan Vukomanovic. The Blasters' boss took all his players and staff off the pitch and refused to come back to finish the game. In the end, the referee had no choice but to call the match in Bengaluru's favour as they qualified for the semifinals with a 1-0 win.
While the Blasters management, Vukomanovic and players are yet to talk about the incident, Chhetri and Bengaluru FC head coach Simon Grayson gave their thoughts after the match.
"I don't know what happened. I'm still trying to figure it out - 22 years of my career, I've never seen this," Chhetri said. He also spoke about the goal, explaining his side of things and why he took the shot.
Meanwhile, Grayson also said that in his long footballing career, he had never seen what transpired on the field on Friday. While he agreed with the referee's decision, he mentioned that he had hoped for a better way to win the match.
From fans to players to owners, many took to social media to comment on the unprecedented scenes:
I only give my opinion regardless of today's game! In any game if there is a foul and there is no card and I don't ask for a wall, I can serve whenever I want. otherwise if there is a foul and there is a card or I ask for a wall, I have to wait for the whistle!♂️

#KBFC fans....
I'm not arguing that the decision may seem/be contentious.
But the hard work put in to get to the playoffs shouldn't be thrown away in the blink of an eye.
Play out the game 'under protest' and then make a scene afterwards.Refereeing DOES need to improve though!

I have never seen anything like what's going on right now in the @IndSuperLeague ♂️ embarrassing scenes! Surely you can't just walk off the pitch

I would prefer to fight it out. But I don't blame Coach Ivan for doing what he did. The goal wasn't valid imo fight me all you want. https://t.co/Y3KHnesSZo

Are you serious @KeralaBlasters - is this how you want this game and our league and Indian football to be depicted globally? Is this how you want all your thousands of fans to remember this team and this manager? This is a disgrace - congratulations to @bengalurufc - semis!

The decision Kerala blasters made to walk off the pitch during a game is completely unprofessional and does not stand the @IndSuperLeague in good light. It opens the door for teams to follow suit if they don't agree with a decision in the future. if not dealt with accordingly.

#IvanVukomanovic is one of my favourite coaches in #ISL ever. I cannot stomach the fact that he has become the first coach in #ISL history to order a team off the pitch after an adverse referee call. Sad. Why, Ivan? Why?? That's inexcusable.@ivanvuko19 @KeralaBlasters #BFCKBFC
