S.League: Billy Mehmet backs Tampines to rebound vs. Warriors FC

Tampines Rovers striker Billy Mehmet is ready for his side to return to winning ways when they take on Warriors FC in Saturday's S.League clash at Jurong West Stadium.

The Stags have enjoyed a relatively strong start to the season and are currently six points behind leaders Albirex Niigata (S) but with two games in hand.

Plenty of talk has surrounded how formidable a squad Tampines coach V. Sundramoorthy assembled at the start of 2016, having landed former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant, as well as signing a host of Singapore internationals from the now-defunct LionsXII.

But it is remarkable how little attention has been given to Mehmet, who arrived at Jurong West Stadium with a prolific record from his time in the Malaysia. The former Republic of Ireland U-21 forward netted an impressive 21 times in all competition for Kedah in 2014, before moving to Sarawak last season and following up with 10 goals to be their leading scorer in the Malaysia Super League.

Already this year, Mehmet has five goals to his name with his latest coming on Tuesday, although it was not enough to help his side get a result as they ultimately lost 3-2 to Bangladesh's Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi in the AFC Cup.

And with an eagerly anticipated clash with Warriors on the horizon, the 31-year-old believes there is no better opportunity of Tampines to bounce back.

"Of course, when you have a defeat, the thing you want the most is to get another game as soon as possible," he told ESPN FC.

"The boys are obviously disappointed that we didn't get any points in Bangladesh but now we have to redeem ourselves, and it's a good opportunity being back here, playing at home against Warriors.

"If we win our games in hand, we'll still be joint-top in the league and we also still have a chance to qualify for the AFC Cup (Round of 16), so it's not all doom and gloom really.

"We just have to be positive on Saturday, get back to basics and play the way we can and, if we do, I'm sure we can pick up the three points."

Although joining the Stags meant having to move to a new country following two years in Malaysia, Mehmet revealed he has had no problems getting used to life in Singapore with the help of his teammates, especially Canadian housemate Webb, who has plied his trade in the S.League since 2010.

Mehmet is also no stranger to challenging for silverware having won the Scottish First Division with St Mirren, promotion to the Turkish Super Lig with Samsunspor, as well as been a runner-up in the A-League with Perth Glory.

While there is plenty of pressure that comes with leading the line for arguably the biggest club in Singapore football, the London native insists it is not something that players should view as a negative.

"To be honest, there is going to pressure whenever you play football," he explained. "You always have to deliver and give the best that you can.

"Sure, it's not easy sometimes when there are a lot of games in a row or you have to travel like we do in the AFC Cup, but it's something you have to be prepared to deal with.

"I think all of us are experienced and professional enough to know that and I believe all we have to do is kick on and get that two or three-match winning run.

"We have a really strong team with the likes of Jordan, Jermaine and the boys from LionsXII last season, and if you look at our bench, they would probably be playing in any other team in the league. "I'm definitely enjoying it so far but the main thing is the team and I'm hoping we can go on a bit of an unbeaten streak."

After Saturday's game, Tampines then take on Hougang United before facing off against Selangor in their final AFC Cup Group E clash at the National Stadium on May 10, when they have to beat the Red Giants to advance to the knockout round.

"We ended up getting some positives from the result and I always tell the players that, whatever they do -- be it on the training ground or in the gym -- they must maintain the same level of motivation.
