Chelsea's Sonia Bompastor makes WSL history with perfect start

Sonia Bompastor has said "every record has to be broken" after she became the first coach in Women's Super League (WSL) history to start a tenure with seven straight wins.

Chelsea beat Manchester City on Saturday in a game that was a stalemate between the sides until the 75th minute when Mayra Ramírez and Guro Reiten added two goals in four minutes to seal all three points and move to the top of the Women's Super League table.

The reigning champions extended their unbeaten streak to seven WSL games with Bompastor reaching the milestone, breaking a WSL record and staking a claim on a sixth consecutive title in the potentially decisive fixture.

"Every record has to be broken," Bompastor told the BBC post match. "Every game is an opportunity for the opposition to break that record. I don't care about myself. The players are doing great, I'm so proud of them."

She praised her team further, admitting that the second half was a better display and that her side "controlled" City during the 2-0 victory.

"I really liked the performance especially more in the second half," she added. "The girls were great tonight. We could have scored earlier in the game, but two goals against Man City in the second half and a clean sheet, I think that is a great performance and a great result.

"Sometimes we had time on the ball and space and we were rushing our decisions. This is what we spoke about at half-time and in the second half we were more efficient.

"Man City didn't create a lot of chances. They were in trouble to find a way to play they are used to. Today we controlled them which is hard."

Midfielder Erin Cuthbert said it was "sheer euphoria" when Ramirez broke the deadlock in the 75th minute and that the team are loving playing under Bompastor, who took over from Emma Hayes following her 12-year tenure.

"I couldn't believe it [when Mayra scored]. It was sheer euphoria," Cuthbert said. "Mayra has that in her locker. For her to breathe and be calm in that moment after she made that run was absolutely brilliant.

"It was more of a traditional performance but Sonia is a winner and will do whatever it takes to win and we got the tactics spot on today.

"We are loving [playing under Sonia]. Emma left some brilliant foundations and Sonia has added to that."

City, who suffered their first loss of the season, following six wins and a draw, are now two points behind Chelsea, who have a game in hand. If they beat Manchester United in the postponed clash next weekend, they will move five points clear at the top, with only eight out of 22 games played.

Manager Gareth Taylor said City lacked creativity and that all the chances came from errors, causing them to face defeat.

"It looked like it was heading for a statement," he told Sky Sports. "We needed a bit more creativity in our final action. It was a game full of errors and it's unfortunate we haven't come away with at least a point."

Taylor's side were missing key figure Lauren Hemp who is ruled out with a knee injury indefinitely, causing City to lack creativity and made them struggle in creating chances. Taylor could not given an update on her return.

"We've always done really well on the occasions we have lost which is rare," he said, when asked about the setback. "It's a tight challenge. We are coming to a team that has done well over the years. We will bounce back for certain. The league is never won in November."
