Cleveland Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert was involved in an alleged road rage incident Friday that led to him crashing his car into a ditch in a Cleveland suburb.
Gilbert was not hurt, but the incident saw him driving on an interstate and through several communities while being chased by another car.
Brunswick, Ohio, police Sgt. Robert Safran told several Cleveland-area media outlets that Gilbert, 23, drove his car into a ditch in the south suburb while trying to get away from the other driver, a 55-year-old man in a Ford Mustang.
The incident began on a local highway. The Mustang's driver told police Gilbert cut him off, and the two exchanged words and gestures. The man followed Gilbert on the highway before they exited in Brunswick.
At one point, the cars stopped, and Gilbert threw a cup out the window and it landed on the Mustang's windshield, WKNR/ESPNCleveland.com reported.
Gilbert was cited for driving with a lack of reasonable control and given a ticket. The driver of the Mustang was cited for disorderly conduct. Neither party has to appear in court.
GIlbert has had a tough start to his career after being the eighth overall pick in the 2014 draft.
He was criticized for immaturity by teammates last season, then was deactivated for the season finale against Baltimore after he was late to a meeting in the team hotel.
He starts the 2015 in Sunday's opener against the Jets coming off a poor preseason, a hip injury and now the driving incident that had several people calling 911 about the two cars speeding past them.
