Veteran quarterback Chase Daniel has agreed to a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan on Wednesday.
Daniel, 30, spent four years backing up Drew Brees in New Orleans early in his career before moving on to higher-paying backup jobs with the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Saints already have a veteran backup they like in Luke McCown, who is due $1.5 million in the final year of his contract, but they apparently couldn't resist a reunion with Daniel, who is five years ounger than McCown.
The Saints could still consider drafting a quarterback with one of their five picks in the first three rounds this year. Although Brees is still thriving, he is 38 years old and heading into the final year of his contract.
Daniel (6-foot, 225 pounds) began his career as an undrafted rookie with the Washington Redskins in 2009, but he joined New Orleans' practice squad that September after being released. He had just nine pass attempts in four years with the Saints, completing seven for 55 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Daniel made two starts with Kansas City and is 51-of-78 passing in his career for 480 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
The Saints also announced that they re-signed veteran backup tight end John Phillips to a one-year deal on Wednesday.
