DeShone Kizer will return as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, the team announced Wednesday.
Kizer, a rookie second-round pick, started the first five games of the season before being replaced for one game by Kevin Hogan. The results were not good, as the Browns fell to 0-6 and Hogan threw for 140 yards with three interceptions during a 33-17 loss in Houston.
"In this league you have to talk less and do more," Kizer said on Wednesday, when asked about his attitude on regaining the starting job. "We come in every Monday after a tough loss and we have this discussion about all the things we need to do. We need to start doing those."
Since then-coach Mike Pettine made the decision to bench Brian Hoyer in favor of Johnny Manziel in 2014, it is the 20th time in 43 games that the Browns have switched starting quarterbacks. Nine of the moves were made because of injury, while 11 were made due to a coach's decision.
Coach Hue Jackson, who has made 10 switches at the position during that span, said he wanted Kizer to watch the game from the sideline in hopes it would clear his mind. Kizer's biggest issue: a league-leading nine interceptions.
"I think for him, he will be a little bit more team-protecting in situational football things," Jackson said Monday, before the decision was announced. "I think he will understand that better and really what it does to your team as you are in those situations.
"No. 2, I think he will demand more from the guys that play around him because I think he understands that every play matters and every play is a difference between having a chance to win or lose a game."
Hogan has been moved to third string on the Browns' depth chart because of bruised ribs that Jackson said were sore and affected him in practice. Cody Kessler will serve as Kizer's backup against Tennessee.
"It wasn't because of performance," Jackson said of moving Hogan down on the depth chart.
Kizer is 81-for-159 (50.9 percent) with three touchdown passes and 12 sacks. Kizer has also rushed for a pair of scores. He said on Wednesday he's intent on making sure he improves and keeps the starting job.
"It's on me to make sure that question never comes back up," Kizer said. "Go out there and do my job to the best of my ability and make sure that No. 7 is out there leading this team for years to come."
