ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Football Team took care of one potential hole by signing left tackle Charles Leno to a three-year deal, according to a source. Leno would have been a free agent this offseason. The deal is worth up to $37.5 million.
Washington signed Leno to a one-year deal last spring after he was released by the Chicago Bears. Leno spent seven years with the Bears, including the last six as their starting left tackle. In Washington, Leno solidified the left side of the line with solid, consistent play. He has started every game and became a leader among the linemen.
It was important for Washington to re-sign him with no clear alternative at left tackle on the roster. Rookie second-round pick Sam Cosmi has started on the right side, where the team would like to keep him for now.
Washington Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Scherff is playing on the franchise tag for a second consecutive year. There has been little movement in the past two offseasons toward a long-term deal.
Coach Ron Rivera has preached building up the offensive line and having depth; retaining Leno helps accomplish that goal.
Washington also would like to re-sign running back J.D. McKissic and safety Bobby McCain, among others. Both are pending free agents after the season.
