ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Rex Ryan made note Wednesday that two of the Buffalo Bills' first four opponents this season have entered the game on extra rest.
"We have a game to play," Ryan said when speaking about injuries to LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins. "I don't think the Giants are going to come in here and feel sorry for us. They're gonna take the time, the extra days that they have.
"Interesting, that's two out of the four games [with opponents on extra rest]. Just a sidebar. But they're not gonna feel sorry for us. But we're gonna step up. And we don't ask them to [feel sorry for us]. You're gonna play the Bills regardless of who's out there on the field."
Ryan scratched his chin as he mentioned how the Giants and New England Patriots (in Week 2) played the Bills on extra rest, as each team participated in a Thursday night game before their game against Buffalo.
The trend will continue next week when the Bills travel to face the Tennessee Titans, who are off this weekend.
Two years ago, the Bills took to their official website to express concerns about the NFL’s schedule-making process, which left the Bills facing six teams on extra rest in the 2013 season.
Researchers at the University at Buffalo dug deeper on the subject and presented a paper at the MIT Sloan Sports and Analytics Conference in February about how the NFL could create a fairer scheduling process.
Soon after, one of the NFL’s main schedule-makers, Mike North, spoke with the researchers about their findings.
