Taking a weekly look at Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy's fantasy output last week and outlook for next week:
Week 7 statistics: 23 rushes, 91 yards, two touchdowns; five catches, 31 yards.
Week 7 fantasy output (ESPN PPR scoring): 27.2 points (seventh overall, second among running backs)
Week 7 fantasy output (ESPN standard scoring): 22.2 points (12th overall, second among running backs)
What happened last week vs. Tampa Bay: While McCoy failed to surpass 100 rushing yards for the fifth consecutive game, he ran for two touchdowns -- his first two of the season, rushing or receiving. Those points put him back near the top of the fantasy charts, around where he was expected to perform before the season. McCoy's 23 carries were his most in a regulation game since 2014 with the Eagles, while his 3.96 yards per carry were his most since Week 1 (5.0). His snap share (83.8 percent) was his highest since Week 2 of last season (92.5 percent).
Blocking played a role in McCoy being able to have his most productive game, from a fantasy perspective, of the season. He gained an average of 3.04 yards before contact per rush, his highest average since the opener (4.18). Bills offensive coordinator Rick Dennison and offensive line coach Juan Castillo used their Week 6 bye to tweak their blocking scheme, which had a tilt toward zone-blocking concepts through the early part of the season.
"What we said was, [after] looking at stats, not just stats, but also our scheme, and what we’re asking our players to do, this is what we need to focus on," Dennison said Monday, adding that there were "some discussions" with offensive linemen about the topic.
What to expect this week vs. Oakland: McCoy seems to have gotten back on track and should have opportunities against another middle-of-the-pack run defense in Oakland's. The Raiders average 2.22 yards before contact per carry allowed to opposing running backs, 13th-best in the NFL and slightly worse than Tampa's mark (2.12) entering its game against Buffalo. If his offensive line remains consistent -- and that has been a question mark this season -- McCoy should have some room to run.
The second component to whether McCoy can sustain his fantasy pace is touchdowns. McCoy received nine snaps in the red zone on Sunday (second-most this season) and had four carries, which was tied with Week 1 and Week 3 as his most this season. Backup Mike Tolbert had four red zone snaps, his third-lowest total this season, and only one snap in a goal-to-go situation. McCoy had two goal-to-go carries and was targeted as a receiver in that situation for the first time this season. There seems to be a shift to use McCoy more at the goal line, which could bode well for his fantasy production.
Oakland's fantasy points per game allowed to running backs this season (PPR scoring): 24.2 (13th-most in NFL)
Oakland's fantasy points per game allowed to running backs this season (standard scoring): 18.9 (12th-most in NFL)
