A week of rest might be smarter play for Sean Lee

Young optimistic about Rams' chances vs. Cowboys (0:51)

Hall of Fame QB Steve Young gives his thoughts on the matchup between the Rams and Cowboys in Dallas. (0:51)

ARLINGTON, Texas -- It’s never easy trying to figure out a game-day roster.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee will work out before Sunday's kickoff against the Los Angeles Rams to test his sore hamstring and decide whether he can play.

Starting left guard Chaz Green practiced without incident on Wednesday and Thursday and showed up Friday with a sore hip and is questionable.

Coaches would like to get to a point where the same seven players are inactive, or at least injuries make the decisions easier. The Cowboys will make their calls on Lee and Green right up until the time when they have to turn in the inactive list.

If Lee can’t play, then the Cowboys will have four healthy linebackers for the game and could be forced to use fullback Keith Smith in an emergency. Justin Durant would start at weakside linebacker, but their sub packages could see a rotation of sorts between Durant, Jaylon Smith and Damien Wilson.

If Green can’t play, then Jonathan Cooper will make his first start of the season at left guard.

In the secondary, the Cowboys appear to be ready to welcome back Nolan Carroll to the fold after he missed a game with a concussion. But it’s likely that Anthony Brown would continue to start and Jourdan Lewis would work as the nickel. Like Carroll, Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring) is questionable, but the Cowboys want to make sure he is close to 100 percent before returning to the field.

There could be a change at running back this week as well. Alfred Morris has been active the first three games, but did not play a snap last week against the Arizona Cardinals. Could Darren McFadden get a look?

Without question the Cowboys need Lee, their defensive leader. Todd Gurley is off to a great start for the Rams and Lee is the Cowboys’ surest tackler. But what if Lee re-injures his leg and misses a month? Discretion is the answer early in the season.

So the guess at the inactives is: Cooper Rush, Morris, Green, Charles Tapper, Hitchens, Lee and Awuzie.
