KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to contract terms with free agent defensive tackle Bennie Logan. A regular starter the last three seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles, the 27-year-old Logan had 2.5 sacks last season.

What it means: The addition of Logan likely signals the end of Dontari Poe’s time with the Chiefs. The Chiefs couldn’t come to an agreement on terms of a multiyear contract with Poe and declined to make him their franchise player. That made Poe a free agent, and he’s taking visits in search of the contract he’s looking for. The Chiefs needed a strong anchor for the middle of their defensive line, which Poe often provided in his five seasons in Kansas City. The Chiefs have three accomplished defensive linemen in addition to Logan: Chris Jones, Allen Bailey and Jaye Howard.

What’s the risk: Logan will be replacing a defensive pillar in Poe. The Chiefs can only guess how their defense might work without him because he’s rarely been out of their lineup. Poe missed only two games in five years and rarely came out of the lineup when he did play. He was among the leaders at his position in snaps played over the course of his career. The Chiefs also signed Logan for just one year, so he’s a temporary fix unless the Chiefs can sign him for the long term during or after next season.
