A breakdown of the New York Jets' 2018 draft class and its progress after three weeks of training camp:

Sam Darnold, QB, first round: The Jets couldn't be happier with Darnold, who plays with uncommon poise for a rookie. He has been getting the majority of the first-team snaps in practice and could wrap up the starting job with a strong showing in the third preseason game. Some people in the building believe it's his job to lose.

Nathan Shepherd, DE, third round: The former Division II standout is on track to replace Muhammad Wilkerson as the starter opposite Leonard Williams. He's still learning how to read blocking schemes, but Shepherd has qualities you can't teach -- size and athleticism. If he's not a starter, he will have a prominent role in the defensive-line rotation.

Chris Herndon, TE, fourth round: The tight-end position is wide open, and Herndon could wind up stealing the job. He's a polished receiver who displays some wiggle when he has the ball in his hands. He missed the first two games because of a minor injury, but he's ready to make his debut on Friday night.

Parry Nickerson, CB, sixth round: Playing in the slot, Nickerson turned some heads early in camp, but he has missed two weeks with a hamstring injury -- a major setback. He'll stick as a bottom-of-the-roster player -- a potential nickelback of the future -- but he'll be in catch-up mode for a while.

Folorunso Fatukasi, DT, sixth round: He will make the team as a backup. Fatukasi has to lot to learn in regard to technique, but his natural strength has impressed the offensive linemen he faces in camp. He's strictly a stay-at-home run defender.

Trenton Cannon, RB, sixth round: The Jets are auditioning him as a punt returner, but that hasn't gone well. Cannon has electric speed, but he has suffered from the dropsies. Chances are he's make the team as the third or fourth running back. He has exciting potential because of his raw talent, but it will take some time to develop him.
