Steelers will look to Martavis Bryant to pick up JuJu Smith-Schuster's slack

Martavis Bryant should have a larger role this week with Pittsburgh's second-leading receiver, JuJu Smith-Schuster, sidelined. Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire

PITTSBURGH -- With JuJu Smith-Schuster missing an entire practice week and set to sit Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers, the Steelers have options to offset the loss of their second-leading receiver.

More Martavis Bryant on the outside: Bryant hasn't surpassed five targets over the past month, but that could change Sunday. Ben Roethlisberger said Bryant has had a productive two weeks, even without flashy stats (nine catches, 72 yards), and the big plays are getting closer to liftoff. Expect the Steelers to try to get Bryant some easy looks, possibly over the middle on slants and crosses, to loosen up coverage on Antonio Brown. With the deep ball not working, Bryant might be best going over the middle in the intermediate range, allowing him to catch and run.

Is Eli Rogers reliable?: The last time Rogers had a prime opportunity to re-establish his role, he dropped a wide-open touchdown pass in Detroit. But he's the Steelers' most natural slot receiver and can beat man coverage, so Pittsburgh will have a role for him. He's not a reliable fantasy play, but he can win over the middle on occasion. Wouldn't be a surprise if he has zero catches -- or five.

More of the same for TEs: Jesse James isn't a game-breaker, but he's shown in the past that he's comfortable in the no-huddle, which the Steelers love to run at home, especially in prime-time games. James was effective last week as a dink-and-dunk option, which Roethlisberger said worked well against Tennessee instead of insisting on taking shots. With Vance McDonald out again, expect James to be a focal point, with Xavier Grimble getting some run-blocking snaps.

Wild card: Justin Hunter: Hunter says he's active this week, and though the plays haven't shown up, Hunter has been good for a few big plays a year during his career. Don't be surprised if the Steelers have a few snaps for him to let loose downfield.
