Proven run-stuffer Darryl Tapp also adds scheme versatility to Bucs

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping that 12-year veteran Darryl Tapp can rejuvenate an ailing pass rush. The defensive end, 33, was one of multiple pass-rushers the Bucs worked out Tuesday and will be signing with the team, as first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

Tapp has spent the majority of his career in rotational roles with the Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions and most recently the New Orleans Saints, who have already cut him, re-signed him and cut him again this year. He was a second-round draft pick by the Seahawks in 2006,

He's seen action in 162 games with 38 starts, including two with the Saints in 2016. His best season came with the Seahawks in 2007, where he registered seven sacks, eight passes defended and three forced fumbles. He's had 4.5 sacks in the last five years. At this point in his career, his best effort comes as a run-stuffer; he was among Pro Football Focus' top-five 4-3 defensive ends against the run last season.

Tapp has experience playing defensive end in a 4-3 defense and outside linebacker in a 3-4, with the former being his preference. The Bucs' coaching staff has talked about showing more 3-4 looks because of injuries up front and the strength of their linebackers. They also unveiled some 3-3-5 against the Buffalo Bills Sunday.

The Bucs have a league-worst seven sacks in six games this year and are banged up at the position. Defensive ends Noah Spence and Ryan Russell are dealing with shoulder injuries. Spence has been playing through his injury -- although he had to leave the game against the Bills because of it -- and Russell has expressed hope that he can return for this week's game against the Carolina Panthers. He is expected to resume practice this week.

Earlier this month, the Bucs waived Jacquies Smith, who was recovering from a torn ACL. The move was done to make room for safety Isaiah Johnson, when Keith Tandy and T.J. Ward were out with injuries. Johnson was waived Tuesday to make room for Tapp.
