Lewis Hamilton has played down the advantage he held over the rest of the field in Friday practice at the Russian Grand Prix and is expecting more from Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in qualifying.
Hamilton was 0.652s clear of Sebastian Vettel in second and 0.867s quicker than Rosberg, but neither of his rivals had clean sessions. After three races without a win so far in 2016, Hamilton said he was not taking anything for granted at this stage.
"The last session was better at least, but Nico didn't get a lap so I don't know where he is, I'm definitely not getting ahead of myself right now," he said. "We made some improvements today, but this is a weak circuit for me so hopefully we found something to get a result tomorrow."
Hamilton spun twice during the second session and said the track surface is highlighting the lack of grip from the Pirelli tyres.
"I mean it's never 100 percent, it feels like you hit the sweet spot but just very rarely. Like one lap is OK, it's nearly there and then the next lap it's off.
"It's very, very tricky, it's a very fine line between being on the perfect line and not. I think it's that the tyres are magnified here as there is not very much grip, it's like driving on ice out there it's crazy."
Hamilton said pole position is the aim in qualifying, but a good result could still be possible from second on the grid. "That's our goal, to get on the front row, so our goal is to lock out the front row. Pole or second, I don't know which one is really best here because it's such a long run down to Turn 1 so I'll do the best I can. I feel there's an opportunity for us this weekend for sure."
