PSG target Angel Di Maria still AWOL as Man United exit nears - Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted he still does not know where Angel Di Maria is as Paris Saint-Germain once again claimed they are close to signing the Argentina international.

Di Maria, who had been given time off after the Copa America, was supposed to fly to California on Saturday to link up with United on their preseason tour.

But he missed his flight and Van Gaal implied he had gone absent without leave in an attempt to force a move by saying that he had still not appeared after Wednesday's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago.

"You can ask that every week, but it is the same answer," Van Gaal said in his news conference. "Maybe you know? I don't know that either."

United are locked in talks with PSG about selling the former Real Madrid winger, who became the most expensive player in the history of English football when Van Gaal paid £59.7 million for him in 2014.

The French champions' manager Laurent Blanc again voiced his confidence that a deal will be completed soon.

"You know negotiations are in tandem," Blanc said in his news conference. "But as United and Paris Saint Germain are both big clubs, that can be difficult. But we feel we are close to the end."

Van Gaal declined to discuss how discussions between the two clubs are going, with suggestions that PSG's first offer for Di Maria was just €40 million.

"I don't know because I'm not the same manager as Laurent Blanc," Van Gaal said. "I don't want to answer these questions.

"With Manchester United, we shall announce something when it is already done and not when it isn't done, because it's a process.

"I have said that many times. We will have to wait and see and I don't want to interfere."
