Ivica Olic considers MLS move after falling out of favour at Hamburg

Croatia international Ivica Olic could leave Hamburg in January and move to Major League Soccer ahead of the 2016 season.

Olic, 36, joined Hamburg from Wolfsburg in January for a second spell at the club, and was a regular as they successfully battled to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.

But this season the Croatia international has struggled to break into Bruno Labbadia's side and has made only five league appearances as a late substitute.

"It's a fact that for the first time in my career I sit on the bench. It's been like at Bayern, but only when I returned from injury," Olic, who played 55 league games for Bayern between 2009 and 2012, told Hamburger Morgenpost. "That's the difference."

Before re-signing for Hamburg, the club he left for Bayern, Olic had already discussed a move to the United States or the Middle East. But last winter Olic felt like he had a job to finish at Hamburg, to help the club maintain its top-flight status.

"I listened to my heart back then," he explained. "I love the club and the city. I call the president my friend. But if I had known how things would turn out, I'd have left for the United States."

Olic, who in September had admitted that his time at Hamburg could be cut short and MLS clubs were showing an interest, will assess his situation ahead of the winter break before making a decision.

"I am still highly motivated, and know that I can play at the highest level," Olic insisted. "If my situation does not change in the next four, five weeks, I will need to make changes.

"Then I will leave Hamburg. Maybe for the United States, or maybe join another league. Maybe I'll stay in the Bundesliga. The chances are 50-50."
