The Detroit Lions had been flirting all day with explosive plays -- and then late in the first half, Matthew Stafford finally found one against the Chicago Bears.
Stafford connected with rookie Quintez Cephus on a 49-yard touchdown down the right sideline to cut Chicago's lead to 16-13 with 2:22 left in the first half. Cephus beat Chicago cornerback Kyle Fuller on the play, falling away to get the ball from the outstretched Bears cornerback.
The play was a little bit of improvisation as well. Stafford, before he threw the ball, motioned slightly with his left hand to tell Cephus to keep going deep. And Cephus created the separation from Fuller with a slight arm movement to get the space necessary.
It was the first touchdown of Cephus' career after being a fifth-round pick out of Wisconsin this past spring. It's touchdown pass No. 275 for Stafford, tying him with Vinny Testaverde for No. 16 all-time.
