Crows, Bulldogs suffer huge AFLW injury setbacks

Adelaide's Eloise Jones and Western Bulldogs star Ellie Blackburn have both been ruled out for the remainder of the AFLW season with serious injuries in huge blows to sides at opposite ends of the ladder.

Jones hurt her right achilles during the Crows' win over Hawthorn last Sunday, two days after Blackburn hobbled off the field with damage to her left foot in the Bulldogs' loss to West Coast.

The two clubs on Monday confirmed their players will undergo surgery to repair their injuries.

Two-time premiership forward Jones will watch from the sidelines as perennial flag contenders Adelaide shoot for a record-extending fourth title.

"It's obviously really disappointing for both Eloise and the team, she is a very important leader and player for us," Crows women's football boss Phil Harper said.

"She will have surgery on her achilles this week or next and begin the rehabilitation process.

"We know Eloise will attack her recovery with a positive attitude and will continue to be a great leader for the team off-field for the rest of the season."

Adelaide (3-0) are one of just two teams left with perfect records after three rounds this season, sitting second on percentage behind surprise leaders St Kilda.

At the other end of the ladder, news of Blackburn's foot injury is another tough blow to the last-placed Bulldogs.

Blackburn, a three-time All-Australian and former club captain, suffered a disruption to the mid-foot ligament in her left foot.

"We're all devastated for Ellie, who has been one of our most durable and reliable players and was set for another impactful campaign," Bulldogs women's football boss Patrice Berthold said.

"After conducting a thorough review of available options, our medical staff have deemed surgery as the best course of action to facilitate her return to play in 2025.

"We'll wrap our arms around Ellie and provide her with as much support as she needs throughout this entire process to ensure she can be at her best with us next year."

The Bulldogs will be rank outsiders in a tough assignment away to reigning premiers Brisbane on Wednesday night. Adelaide host Essendon on Sunday.
