Falcons promote WR Marvin Hall, waive draft pick Brian Hill

The Atlanta Falcons, with star receiver Julio Jones coming off a hip flexor injury and Mohamed Sanu sidelined by a hamstring injury, signed wide receiver Marvin Hall from the practice squad.

To make room for Hall on the 53-man roster, the Falcons waived running back Brian Hill, a 2017 fifth-round draft pick from Wyoming. Hill was inactive in the first two games of the season because of an ankle injury.

The roster movement shouldn't be a surprise, considering the injury situation. Jones is set to play coming off his injury, but the promotion of Hall gives some added insurance in case Jones has a setback, which would further deplete depth at the position with Sanu down this week. Sanu was ruled out Friday.

Justin Hardy appeared to fill in at Sanu's spot during Friday's practice, with Jones and Taylor Gabriel working outside. Andre Roberts, the primary return man, could see more action at receiver. Nick Williams filled in the last game against Buffalo when the Falcons were without Jones and Sanu, but Williams' role going into Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins remains unclear.

The undrafted Hall, who was released as part of final cuts, impressed during preseason games with his speed while compiling a team-high 151 receiving yards. He played under Falcons offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian when Sarkisian was the coach at the University of Washington.

As for Hill, his status will be worth monitoring. He could be claimed off waivers by a team that needs a running back. In fact, one AFC coach told ESPN on Saturday that Hill definitely could generate some interest, despite the timing of his release. If he clears waivers, the Falcons most likely would try to re-sign him to the practice squad. It's not a position of need for Atlanta, with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman the top two backs. But Hill declared himself the best running back in the draft and was thought to be the ideal candidate for short-yardage situations. However, he struggled to adjust immediately, in part because of injury.
