Johnny Manziel, Browns enjoy their fast start

CLEVELAND -- Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota ended last week's season opener with a perfect passer rating. Johnny Manziel started the second game the same way -- with Mariota watching from the other sideline in FirstEnergy Stadium.

Manziel looked composed and comfortable in the first half Sunday for the Cleveland Browns, throwing a 60-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin on the game’s second play and then guiding a 50-yard touchdown drive on the second possession.

Manziel completed his first four passes, for 100 yards. On those drives he had the same rating Mariota ended the season opener with: a perfect 158.3.

Ratings change over a game, and an entire half remained. But the Browns' start was exactly what Manziel and the team needed.

The defense played well and Manziel was able to get settled in with a fast, and strong, start.

ESPN Stats and Information reported Manziel’s two touchdown drives marked the first time the Browns had scored 14 points in the first quarter of a home game since Week 12 of the 2010 season. The stats folks also reported that Manziel was the first Browns quarterback to pass for 100 yards in the first quarter in the last two seasons.

Manziel had no turnovers in the first half Sunday after turning the ball over three times in the second half of the opener.

He connected with Benjamin for a big play for the second week in a row. He was able to get rid of the ball quickly. He took no unnecessary chances while scrambling.

Along with Benjamin, Manziel led the Browns to a 21-0 halftime lead, the first time the Browns had a 21-point halftime lead since 1994, when Bill Belichick was the coach.

The second half remained, but the Browns couldn’t have asked for a better opening for Manziel’s first start in the 2015 season.
