Cooper Rush gets No. 2 QB reps for first time in Cowboys camp

FRISCO, Texas -- Have the Dallas Cowboys opened up a competition for the backup spot to Dak Prescott?

For the first time this summer, Cooper Rush took second-team snaps over Kellen Moore, a byproduct of how well the undrafted rookie has played in three preseason games. The two split the second-team work, with Moore getting eight snaps and Rush getting 13 after taking over in the end-of-practice situational work.

Rush has completed 26 of 38 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns. Moore, who entered camp as No. 2, has completed 30 of 55 passes for 382 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Jason Garrett did not address the media Monday, but in the Cowboys' 14 padded practices in Oxnard, California, Moore followed Prescott in every team drill.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones was not ready to say there would be a competition for the spot but acknowledged Rush's good play and noted the team's faith in Moore. Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan is perhaps Moore's biggest fan, having spent time with him in Detroit before joining the Cowboys.

Other notes from Monday's practice:

  • In his first training camp practice back in Frisco, Dak Prescott completed 15 of 24 passes in team and 7-on-7 drills. His smartest play might have come in situational work at the end of practice, when he appeared to intentionally miss on a pass to Ezekiel Elliott, knowing that a couple of yards gained would not have been worth giving up a timeout to stop the clock. On the next play, he hit Dez Bryant for a big gain that eventually led to a game-tying field goal by Dan Bailey as time expired. In 15 padded practices in camp, Prescott has completed 174 of 244 passes in team and 7-on-7 drills.

  • LB Sean Lee practiced for the first time in a week after suffering a hamstring strain while in Oxnard. He did not play in the last preseason game but hopes to play Saturday against Oakland. Lee took turns in 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills. In his first play of team drills, he made sure to thud-up RB Ezekiel Elliott.

  • Perhaps the left guard battle is now down to two. Chaz Green and Jonathan Cooper split the first-team work on Monday. Byron Bell was not at practice for an unknown reason. Cooper has started two of the first three preseason games. Bell started the second. Green was slowed earlier in camp by a shoulder strain but returned to practice last week.

  • WR Brice Butler made some fan's day when he made a one-handed grab of a Kellen Moore deep ball in 7-on-7 work and threw the ball in the stands. The Cowboys initially retrieved the ball, but in a matter of moments they gave the ball back to the fan.

  • Elliott made LB Joseph Jones look silly in one-on-one work, deking inside and then faking out, coming back inside and heading back out again. Jones was on skates and Elliott made an easy grab.

  • CB Nolan Carroll was beaten deep three times, including twice by Dez Bryant in one-on-one drills. Carroll offered little resistance on the second deep throw from Prescott. In 7-on-7 drills, Terrance Williams ran by Carroll for a big gain that had receivers coach Derek Dooley raising his hands for a touchdown.

  • S Byron Jones downed a flip-flop punt from Chris Jones during special teams drill, not buying the fake of the punt returner. Jones could be a big asset as a gunner on the punt team.

  • Rookie WR Ryan Switzer took some turns returning punts after aggravating a hamstring strain in Oxnard. He did not appear to do any 11-on-11 drills, as the Cowboys look to work him back deliberately.
