Kiper and McShay agree (for now): Marcus Davenport to Packers at No. 14

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. agree -- for now -- when it comes to the Green Bay Packers and the 14th overall pick in the NFL draft.

Just like Kiper did last month, McShay went with defensive end Marcus Davenport for the Packers in his latest mock draft, which is version No. 2.

Davenport may have solidified his spot in the top-15 with his performance at the Senior Bowl, where he was impressive in practice. The UT-San Antonio standout measured at 6-foot-5 7/8 and 259 pounds and could offer immediate help for the Packers’ pass rush problem.

In McShay’s scenario, the Packers would be getting the sixth defensive player to come off the board and the fourth front-seven defender behind NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb (to the Colts at No. 3), Virginia Tech defensive end/outside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (No. 10 to the Raiders) and Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith (No. 13 to the Redskins).

In his first mock draft, McShay had the Packers taking Boston College outside linebacker Harold Landry. This time, he had Landry at No. 27 to the Saints.

There seems to be little doubt that new general manager Brian Gutekunst will address the defensive side of the ball in the draft, but perhaps it won’t be the need it appears to be now if he’s more aggressive in free agency than his predecessor, Ted Thompson.

Under Thompson, the Packers went with a defensive player for their first pick in the draft each of the past six years.

Still, Gutekunst’s charge is to give new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine an influx of talent.

The last time the Packers hired a new defensive coordinator, it was 2009, and Thompson gave Dom Capers two first-round defenders. He took nose tackle B.J. Raji at No. 9 overall and then traded back into the first round to get outside linebacker Clay Matthews at No. 26.
