Colts' 53-man roster projection includes way too many injured players

The Indianapolis Colts have one preseason game remaining at Cincinnati on Thursday before they have to trim down their roster to 53 players.

Here’s a look at the 53-man roster projection:

QUARTERBACK (2): Andrew Luck, Scott Tolzien

Luck showed little signs of rust during the preseason. Tolzien, who was inconsistent at times, goes from backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay to being Luck's backup as the Colts decided not to re-sign Matt Hasselbeck after three seasons.

RUNNING BACK (3): Frank Gore, Robert Turbin, Stevan Ridley

On Sunday, the Colts signed Ridley, who is averaging 4.2 yards a carry in his career, in an attempt to find a stable backup behind Gore. Backs not named Gore have rushed for just 91 yards on 49 carries in the preseason.

TIGHT END (3): Dwayne Allen, Jack Doyle, Erik Swoope

The Colts entered training camp with depth concerns behind Allen and Doyle, but Swoope, a former college basketball player, has the inside track for the third tight end spot.

WIDE RECEIVER (6): T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Quan Bray, Chester Rogers, Tevaun Smith

Just like at running back, nobody has stepped up to be the fourth and fifth receivers behind Hilton, Moncrief and Dorsett. The Colts are an injury away with one of those three from having concerns at this position.

OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Anthony Castonzo, Jack Mewhort, Ryan Kelly, Kitt O'Brien, Joe Reitz, Denzelle Good, Joe Haeg, Jonotthan Harrison, Le'Raven Clark, Austin Blythe

New year, same problems when it comes to the offensive line. Injuries and poor play give little optimism that this unit will be improved.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7): Kendall Langford, Sterling Bailey, Henry Anderson, David Parry, Zach Kerr, T.Y. McGill, Hassan Ridgeway,

This could be the defense’s strongest unit once Langford and Anderson return from their injuries. The Colts will have to make a roster move once Art Jones returns from his four-game suspension.

LINEBACKER (10): Trent Cole, Erik Walden, Robert Mathis, D'Qwell Jackson, Earl Okine, Nate Irving, Sio Moore, Josh McNary, Antonio Morrison, Edwin Jackson

This is the oldest unit on the entire roster. Cole, Walden, Mathis and Jackson all are at least 30. Irving is the frontrunner to start at inside linebacker alongside Jackson.

CORNERBACK (5): Patrick Robinson, Vontae Davis, Darius Butler, D'Joun Smith, Antonio Cromartie

This is a depleted group. Robinson, Davis, Butler and Smith all are dealing with injuries. Davis is expected to miss at least the first few games.

SAFETY (4): Mike Adams, T.J. Green, Clayton Geathers, Winston Guy

The second-year Geathers has missed all of training camp and the preseason with a foot injury. Green will start with Adams if Geathers isn’t back in time.

SPECIALISTS (3): K Adam Vinatieri, P Pat McAfee, LS Matt Overton

This was the easiest category because this trio makes up one of the best special-teams units in the NFL.
