Gerald Everett: Rams tight ends 'could be better' than Redskins pair

IRVINE, Calif. -- Gerald Everett, the 44th overall pick in this year's draft, is setting expectations high.

The rookie out of South Alabama arrived for Los Angeles Rams training camp on Wednesday afternoon and was asked what he and Tyler Higbee, another young tight end on the roster, could do on the field together.

"I think that we complement each other very well," Everett said. "Tyler is more of a big-body tight end, so I feel like we could be better than the Redskins tight ends, if I can say that."

Everett was referring to Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis, a duo that combined for 1,269 receiving yards and helped the 2016 Redskins lead the NFL in yards from the tight end position. Sean McVay was the offensive coordinator for that team and is now the head coach for the Rams, who are counting on a rookie and a second-year player at tight end. It's a lofty goal.

"Yeah, it is," Everett said. "I'm pretty confident in us."

Everett, 6-foot-3, and Higbee, listed at 6-6, are both athletic and physical with an ability to stretch the deep middle of the field. Last season's Redskins ranked 20th in the NFL in multiple-tight-end sets, but McVay could use Everett and Higbee together often on a Rams team that lacks a true vertical threat at wide receiver. Question is: Which one is Reed and which is Davis?

"I'm not sure about that," Everett said, smiling. "We'll just have to wait and see."
