FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Bill Belichick held his lone playoff bye-week news conference on Thursday morning, and if there was one word to sum it up, it would be "urgency." The team might have a week off from playing a game, but Belichick is clearly keeping his foot pressed to the accelerator.
There were a few exchanges that stood out in this regard.
First, Belichick was asked about the 12 Patriots players who could be playing in their first playoff game -- receiver Kenny Britt, defensive tackle Adam Butler, receiver Brandin Cooks, offensive lineman Cole Croston, wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, running back Mike Gillislee, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, linebacker Nicholas Grigsby, tight end Jacob Hollister, defensive end Eric Lee, offensive tackle LaAdrian Waddle and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. -- and if he spends any time talking to them about the differences of the postseason to the regular season.
Specifically, Belichick was asked if it would put extra pressure on them if he spoke to them about it.
"I don't know about pressure. It's a one-game season, so I don't know how much more pressure you can get than that," he answered. "We're all living in it. ... It's different. There is no other game on the schedule. It's a one-game season. It's not like that the rest of the season. We're in a different season now."
Later in the news conference, Belichick was asked how much a snowy day like Thursday was a lesson in accountability for his players because they were still required to be at the stadium on time despite the blizzard-like conditions.
"Every day is a work day," he responded, flatly.
Finally, Belichick had been asked how much pride he takes in developing young coaches -- Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia and Brian Flores are scheduled to interview for head-coaching vacancies -- and he answered with a bottom-line approach.
"I take the most pride in winning," he said. "The things that we do to help us win, the people that help us win and their contributions, those are all the things that are important. Other things come with that, but really, this program is geared to winning. So if it's about winning, then it's important. Then there are other things that are subsidiaries of that, but that's the most important. That's what we're here for."
