Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins could miss time with ankle injury

The New York Giants could have a new concern when they return next Sunday to play the Oakland Raiders. They could be without Pro Bowl cornerback Janoris Jenkins.

Jenkins suffered an ankle injury in Thursday night’s 20-10 loss to the Washington Redskins that was “painful” the following day, according to coach Ben McAdoo. The Giants believe it could cause him to miss games.

Jenkins left the stadium Thursday night in a walking boot.

“He’s in some pain right now, so there’s a possibility,” McAdoo said.

Jenkins hurt his ankle when he was taken down in the end zone on his 53-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Redskins. It was his second interception in as many games, following a rough outing against the San Francisco 49ers in which his effort came into question.

The Giants starting cornerback left the game after the play, but later returned. Washington’s Josh Doctson caught a touchdown pass on him later in the fourth quarter.

Jenkins admitted after the game the ankle was bothering him.

“He didn’t beat me. I just couldn’t explode out of my break,” he said. “Good play. Just a good route.”

Jenkins is the Giants' top cornerback. He has nine passes defended, three interceptions and two touchdowns this season. His absence could be problematic facing Oakland receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree next Sunday.

Jenkins isn’t the only cornerback the Giants lost on Thursday night. Donte Deayon fractured his forearm and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

The Giants are likely going to need second-year cornerback Eli Apple moving forward. Apple was inactive the past two games as a coach’s decision.

The injury-ravaged Giants also lost linebacker Curtis Grant for the season with a knee injury that occurred in the first quarter of Thursday's loss. Grant was part of the rotation with the Giants short on linebackers.

There is hope, however, that starting middle linebacker B.J. Goodson could return next Sunday against the Raiders. The same holds true for wide receiver Sterling Shepard. He missed his second straight game with migraines, but McAdoo reiterated Friday he is not in the concussion protocol.
