Seahawks activate Dion Jordan off PUP, but will he be ready Week 1?

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks cut 33 players Saturday, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. Here's a closer look at the final cuts:

Most significant move: It's a huge break for the Seahawks that defensive end Dion Jordan isn't beginning the season on the physically unable to perform list given how thin they are on capable pass-rushers. The fact that they activated Jordan doesn't necessarily mean he'll be ready to play by Week 1. It does indicate that they think he'll be back at some point within the first few weeks; he would have to miss at least six games had he started the season on the PUP list. Jordan is their second-best edge rusher behind Frank Clark. If he isn't quite ready for next Sunday's opener in Denver, Branden Jackson and rookie Rasheem Greem are two starting options.

Maxwell to IR: When training camp began, Byron Maxwell looked like the presumed starter at right cornerback opposite Shaquill Griffin, who had moved over to Richard Sherman's old spot on the left side. But Maxwell being put on injured reserve means former 49ers starter Dontae Johnson -- who had a rough 2017 season -- is in line for that job with rookie Tre Flowers, a converted safety, pushing him for playing time. With Maxwell on IR and Earl Thomas still holding out, Seattle's secondary will be hard for many to recognize. No more original or even early members of the Legion of Boom.

Trader John: Seahawks general manager John Schneider didn't come close to matching last year's total of five trades while setting the team's initial 53-man roster, but he was able to pull off two of them. And no, neither involved Earl Thomas. The Seahawks gave up a 2019 seventh-round pick to the Oakland Raiders for safety Shalom Luani. Seattle also sent wide receiver Marcus Johnson to the Indianapolis Colts for tight end Darrell Daniels. That move gives Seattle a reinforcement with presumed starter Ed Dickson being put on the reserve/non-football injury list. It's not clear if that means Dickson will have to miss the first six games.
