Last month, when Vintage and Merced high schools faced off for the California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section Division II boys' soccer championship game -- their equivalent of a state title -- the score was knotted 1-1 in the final minute of overtime.
In other words, nearly everyone in the stadium expected penalty kicks.
Not Jesus Ochoa. With seconds left to go, the senior captain looped in a free kick from more than 40 yards away. But instead of picking out a tall teammate, Ochoa just plain scored himself.
"I was just trying to center it, to get a lucky header, but it came out good and helped the team," Ochoa told the Napa Valley Register. "I'm still in shock. I know what happened, but I'm in shock. I'm in shock."
