Pirelli won't compromise brand image with 2016 changes

Pirelli says its brand image must be protected when finalising plans to shake-up the way it supplies tyres next year.

Earlier this month, the Strategy Group put forward plans for increased choice of tyre compounds for teams ahead of races in 2016. Currently Pirelli nominates the two compounds ahead of each race that it believes are suited to the track, but at some races next year teams may be allowed to choose their own compounds to try to gain an advantage over their rivals.

However, motorsport director Paul Hembery said teams will not be able to take a punt on tyres if Pirelli believes their performance will reflect poorly on its brand.

"There needs to be certain constraints put in place that ensures decisions that impact on safety or the image of Pirelli would be avoided," Hembery said. "There will be a mid-ground that gives some flexibility but ensures there will be no risks to safety and the image of the company.

"Of course, the whole point of doing this is to try to create another level of interest from a racing point of view. That's the other point that needs to be reported is that we are only doing it to try to create a race that is more stimulating from a spectator's point of view."

One idea being pursued is an ultra-soft tyre that sits below the super-soft in Pirelli's range and would be designed for use on street circuits such as Monaco and Singapore. However, Hembery said the new compound would need testing this year, ideally during a Friday practice on an appropriate circuit towards the end of the year.

"Hungary is probably too early," Hembery told Fox Sports. "It will probably be in Singapore and Abu Dhabi as the Friday experimental tyre. But these things change all the time, there's been another proposal and we may be running something a little bit more bespoke."
