Sunderland are closing in on the loan signing of Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.
The Black Cats have made an approach to take Manquillo, a former Liverpool loanee, on a season-long deal, and talks with Atletico are at an advanced stage.
Manquillo joined Liverpool on a two-year loan deal in the summer of 2014, but the agreement was cut short after he made just 10 Premier League appearances for the Reds.
The 22-year-old spent last season at French club Marseille, for whom he played 37 times, and remains well down the pecking order at the Vicente Calderon.
Atletico are ready to let the former Spain Under-21 international move on and Sunderland have made an offer to take him on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
Watford have also expressed an interest in Manquillo, with Hornets boss Walter Mazzari keen to add a right wing-back to his squad -- but Sunderland are in pole position.
Manager David Moyes is desperate to add to his squad before the close of the transfer window.
