Everton defender Seamus Coleman made his return to action in the under-23's Premier League Cup clash with Portsmouth.
Coleman, 29, played 58 minutes at Goodison Park as he works his way back to full fitness.
The right-back suffered a double leg fracture in Republic of Ireland's goalless draw with Wales at the Aviva Stadium in March and only returned to training earlier this month.
His Everton and Ireland teammate James McCarthy suffered a similar season-ending injury during Saturday's 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion.
Everton's youngsters were leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Nathan Broadhead and Bassala Sambou when Coleman left the action.
