BOSTON -- Having held his breath overnight, Boston Red Sox third baseman Travis Shaw can exhale, knowing that his bruised left foot isn't broken.
X-rays taken Thursday at Massachusetts General Hospital were negative for a fracture, the Red Sox announced. Shaw is listed as day-to-day with a contusion after fouling a pitch off his left foot in the fourth inning of Wednesday night's 11-6 victory over the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park.
Shaw left the game four innings later when his foot began to swell. Red Sox manager John Farrell said a scan taken after the game was "inconclusive," leaving the team to order additional testing.
The Red Sox are idle Thursday. If Shaw is unable to start Friday night's series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway, utility man Brock Holt could play third base. Otherwise, the Red Sox could give a start to rookie Marco Hernandez.
Shaw is batting .274 with nine homers, 48 RBIs and an .801 OPS in 83 games for the Red Sox.
