Buffalo Bills
The biggest news of the weekend was the release of two-time All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy. After months of publicly backing McCoy as their starter, the Bills decided a backfield featuring Frank Gore and rookie Devin Singletary were their best options. A league source said Buffalo prefers the idea of Singletary learning from Gore, regardless of how the two split the workload. General manager Brandon Beane said the Bills explored the idea of trading McCoy once they decided to part ways with him, but ultimately didn't find the right fit and wanted to afford him the opportunity to choose his next destination. -- Marcel Louis-Jacques

Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins kept seven undrafted free agents and all six draft picks. Getting rid of Dwayne Allen, Tank Carradine and Brice Butler on Saturday, along with T.J. McDonald, Akeem Spence, Jordan Mills and Clive Walford earlier this week, shows the direction Miami is going in 2019. Allen might be the most notable of the moves, as he was signed as a free agent from New England in March with the expectation that he would be Miami's starting tight end and help install the offense. Releasing veteran QB Brian Hoyer was the most notable, and it means 2019 fourth-round draft choice Jarrett Stidham is the top (and only) backup to Tom Brady. Stidham played well in the preseason, totaling 218 snaps to 48 for Hoyer, which reflected how Bill Belichick and the coaching staff were taking a long look at Stidham. But Hoyer also played well in his limited opportunities, and going with one backup behind Brady is risky in the sense that no 42-year-old quarterback has ever started all 16 regular-season games. Belichick traditionally likes to keep just two quarterbacks, but in 2011 (Ryan Mallett) and 2016 (Jacoby Brissett) he kept a third layer of insurance. -- Mike Reiss

The decision to cut third-round pick Jachai Polite is surprising because teams rarely give up this quickly on picks that high. New GM Joe Douglas, who didn't draft Polite, didn't rate him as highly as his predecessor, Mike Maccagnan. The Douglas regime had preconceived questions about his work ethic and commitment to football. Polite had a chance to change the perception, but he managed only three tackles in 100 defensive snaps in the preseason. He also failed to establish a role on special teams. This was a loud message: The new sheriffs in town will emphasize culture and hold players accountable. The Jets are desperate for an edge rusher, yet they cut loose a player who recorded 11 sacks last season in the SEC. What does that tell you? Defensive lineman Willie Henry, selected in the fourth round in 2016, started training camp working with the first-team defense. But he was cut Saturday. Henry disappeared in the preseason, making only one tackle in four games. Still, Henry showed promise in 2017, when he totaled 32 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Baltimore is keeping only five defensive linemen, its fewest in five years. The Ravens decided to go thin up front on defense in order to keep a third quarterback (impressive rookie Trace McSorley), young depth on the offensive line (guard Patrick Mekari and tackle Greg Senat) and a dozen defensive backs. That meant the Ravens had to part ways with Henry, DE Zach Sieler (Ozzie Newsome's final draft pick as general manager) and DT Gerald Willis, a high-profile undrafted rookie. -- Jamison Hensley

The undrafted free agent out of Central Connecticut State earned the third spot on the depth chart after completing 69.8% of his passes for 347 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Fan favorite Jamie Gillan, an undrafted rookie out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, stunningly beat out incumbent punter Britton Colquitt, who was a Pro Bowl alternate last season. Nicknamed "The Scottish Hammer" after his native Scotland, Gillan grew up playing rugby and impressed all training camp, including unloading a booming, 74-yard punt in a preseason game. Gillan making the team means the Browns will, interestingly, be rolling with a pair of rookies on special teams, including place-kicker Austin Seibert, whom Cleveland drafted in the fifth round this year. Seibert struggled early in training camp before coming on strong over the past week. Pairing Gillan and Seibert might seem risky, but because of their talent, the upside is high. -- Jake Trotter

Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers' roster has been mostly set for months, but the play of two rookie linebackers made mild waves on cut-down day. Undrafted pass-rusher Tuzar Skipper and sixth-round inside linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III showcased enough playmaking and special-teams ability to stick around, forcing Pittsburgh to make a difficult call at receiver with Eli Rogers. Ryan Switzer's versatility as a slot receiver, kick returner and playmaker out of the backfield made Rogers expendable. The Steelers decided to keep Josh Dobbs as the third quarterback despite Mason Rudolph winning the No. 2 job. Speedster Johnny Holton could be an option to return at some point as a vertical threat for Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers cut two late-round picks, linebacker Sutton Smith and offensive lineman Derwin Gray, but kept fourth-round running back Benny Snell Jr. as the third tailback. -- Jeremy Fowler

The Texans' biggest move was a trade to add key pieces to their offense. The Texans acquired left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills from the Dolphins. Houston desperately needed protection for quarterback Deshaun Watson after he was sacked an NFL-leading 62 times last season. While the addition came at a high price -- it included two first-round picks and a second-round pick -- the Texans are one step closer to having a dominant offense led by Watson and receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller. -- Sarah Barshop

The Colts are in need of a backup quarterback even more after the release of Phillip Walker. The Colts recently had veteran quarterbacks Brock Osweiler, Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden in for a visit. Brian Hoyer, DeShone Kizer and Cardale Jones are some notable quarterbacks who were released Saturday. No major surprises, but the release of defensive lineman Datone Jones was somewhat unexpected. The former first-round pick had a solid training camp and played well in the preseason, but the Jaguars opted to go with an additional interior lineman in Eli Ankou rather than Jones, who can play both inside and outside. The development of third-year player Dawuane Smoot, who had his best training camp and preseason the past month, is likely a big reason the team was willing to cut Jones. The Titans traded third-year wideout Taywan Taylor to the Browns in exchange for a 2020 draft pick. Taylor was a third-round pick of the Titans in 2017. The move comes as a bit of a surprise given how Taylor was considered to be the Titans' best field-stretching wideout and listed as a starter on the initial unofficial depth chart. Taylor struggled in the preseason opener, dropping a pass and failing to get both feet in bounds on another target. Former undrafted free-agent receivers Darius Jennings and Kalif Raymond both had solid performances during training camp and landed roster spots. Jennings brings extra value as a kick returner and has the versatility to line up at any of the receiver spots, while Raymond doubles as a punt returner. -- Turron Davenport

The Broncos' depth chart at quarterback is Joe Flacco -- and that's it. While rookie quarterback Drew Lock was on the initial roster, the Broncos will move Lock to injured reserve in the coming days because of a thumb injury he suffered in the preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers. That makes Flacco the only healthy quarterback. It also means a backup quarterback, one who could be up to speed by the time the Broncos open the regular season Sept. 9 at Oakland, will be added as quickly as possible. Although he played well during preseason play, the Chargers released reserve quarterback Cardale Jones. The Ohio State project finished preseason 28-of-41 (68.3%) for 357 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Jones also rushed for 39 yards, including a 2-yard score. He was sacked four times, posting a 103.4 passer rating. Although he outplayed this year's fifth-round selection, Easton Stick, the Chargers chose to keep the North Dakota State product as the team's third quarterback behind Philip Rivers and Tyrod Taylor. However, the 26-year-old Jones should receive some interest around the league or in the newly formed XFL. -- Eric D. Williams

Cutting a projected starter at outside linebacker in Brandon Marshall does raise an eyebrow or two, but it was not all that surprising. Not with how Marshall was unable to fully participate in the offseason program and how he had to use a majority of training camp and preseason games to rehab from his knee injury. And the Raiders, with a paltry 13 sacks and 14 interceptions last season, could have used his savvy, no? Guess not. Paging Nicholas Morrow, then, to fill the vacancy at weakside linebacker. Beyond Marshall's release, the Raiders kept four undrafted rookie free agents in punter A.J. There really were no surprises among the Cowboys' final cuts, but if you said back in March when George Iloka signed as a free agent he wouldn't make the team, then that would have been a little surprising. Iloka was released, but he has a shoulder injury after not playing in the final two games and is looking at surgery. He signed a one-year deal that included $210,000 in guaranteed base salary, which the Cowboys would not owe if he joined another team. Iloka, who has 79 starts in seven seasons, spent most of training camp working with the backups and had just one day of splitting reps with the first-teamers before his injury did not allow him to practice. If Ezekiel Elliott reports at some point before the Sept. 8 opener, the Cowboys likely will be granted a roster exemption, but if Elliott is active for the game, they would have to make a roster move.-- Todd Archer

Coach Pat Shurmur always says it doesn't matter when you were drafted once you're part of the program. That proved true during final cuts, when the Giants severed ties with last year's fourth-round QB, Kyle Lauletta. It's an interesting approach considering Lauletta was among the first selections of the Dave Gettleman-Shurmur regime. Instead, they kept veteran Alex Tanney as their third quarterback. Lauletta had a strong preseason after a tumultuous rookie year marred by an arrest stemming from a motor vehicle incident. He completed 59.7% of his passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions, which included the walk-off winner Thursday night in New England. Washington Redskins
The Redskins finally cut receiver Josh Doctson after trying to trade him for at least a year. Doctson never produced to the level desired after Washington drafted him 22nd overall four years ago. He caught a combined 79 passes the past two seasons, and the arrival of rookies Terry McLaurin and Kelvin Harmon, among others, made Doctson expendable. There had been sentiment within the organization to make this move long ago. But Doctson survived, in part, because he had fans among the coaches; teammates often talked about catches he'd make in practice. It wasn't enough. The move leaves Paul Richardson as the most senior member. Richardson, dealing with a quadriceps issue, is entering his sixth season with 115 career catches. -- John Keim

Kicker Eddy Pineiro made Chicago's initial 53-man roster after going 3-for-3 on field goal attempts but badly missing an extra point in the Bears' preseason finale against the Titans. Head coach Matt Nagy seemed to endorse the idea of sticking with Pineiro after Thursday's game because it would be difficult to get a new kicker up to speed in time for the Bears' season opener Thursday against the visiting Packers. Nagy said the Bears are comfortable with Pineiro, who spent most of the offseason with the team after being traded to Chicago from Oakland. Still, Pineiro's job is hardly secure. -- Jeff Dickerson

When Bob Quinn drafted Teez Tabor in the second round in 2017, he defended the selection by saying Tabor was the player he scouted the most in the entire draft. Two years later, Tabor is waived and that's actually a good sign for Detroit. Quinn has been good in the past about moving on from players when he realizes they aren't going to work out for Detroit, loyalty aside. He has been partial to his draft picks, though. Still, he waived both of the Lions' seventh-round picks: tight end Isaac Nauta and defensive tackle P.J. Johnson. The Packers cut last season's No. 2 quarterback, DeShone Kizer, and are going with Tim Boyle as Aaron Rodgers' only backup for the moment. They're also sticking with Mason Crosby as the kicker for the 13th season after a competition with Sam Ficken. The biggest surprise? Wide receiver Darrius Shepherd made the team, and he took the most unlikely path. He wasn't among the 28 receivers drafted or the 73 others signed as undrafted free agents shortly after the draft this year. That means he was no better than the 102nd-best receiver in this year's class. Now he's one of Rodgers' six receivers. The Packers went with the 5-foot-11 Shepherd over the 6-5 Allen Lazard, who garnered praise from Rodgers late in the preseason. The Vikings walked away from punter/kicker Kaare Vedvik after acquiring him three weeks ago from Baltimore for a fifth-round pick. The move isn't surprising given how much Vedvik struggled in Minnesota, going 1-of-4 on field goals after notching 12-of-13 in Baltimore the past two preseasons. Minnesota hopes to get Vedvik back on the practice squad, but for now will move forward with Dan Bailey at kicker, Matt Wile as the punter and rookie Austin Cutting at long-snapper. Maybe it wasn't that surprising, but it's still interesting to see the Falcons go with undrafted Olamide Zaccheaus (5-foot-8, 193 pounds) as the extra receiver over sixth-round draft pick Marcus Green (5-8, 191). Both Zaccheaus and Green auditioned in the return game and both fumbled opportunities during preseason games. But Zaccheaus, plain and simple, made plenty of big plays as a wide receiver in both practice and the games. He showed he's a smart player, being in the right places and knowing how to position himself to get the edge on the defender. Plus, he can thrive in coverage on special teams, which is important. Veteran running back Kenjon Barner is the return specialist, as the Falcons kept six running backs, including Brian Hill and fullback Ricky Ortiz. -- Vaughn McClure

Overshadowed was the release of veteran RB Cameron Artis-Payne, leaving the job as Christian McCaffrey's backup to rookies Jordan Scarlett, Elijah Holyfield and former Louisville quarterback Reggie Bonnafon. In reality, they're fighting for table scraps as McCaffrey, who played 91.3% of the snaps in 2018, is slated to get more touches this season. Undrafted rookie Deonte Harris is the Saints' new punt and kickoff returner after flashing his electrifying potential this summer. The 5-foot-6, 170-pounder from Division II Assumption College (Worcester, Massachusetts) set the NCAA all-division record with 14 career return touchdowns. Then he took a 78-yard punt return to the house this preseason. The Saints initially signed veteran punt returner Marcus Sherels in free agency, but he landed on injured reserve. The Bucs parted ways with 2016 second-round draft pick Noah Spence (39th overall). Sources told ESPN the Bucs had attempted to trade Spence in recent days but were unsuccessful. While Spence was able to generate pressure at times this preseason, the team wanted to see more in the form of sacks and against the run. He recorded three tackles in four games. When the Bucs hired coach Bruce Arians in 2019 and made a shift to a 3-4 defense under coordinator Todd Bowles, Spence was a player many in the organization felt benefited because of his athleticism. Spence was routinely getting first-team reps opposite Carl Nassib in OTAs and training camp. Throughout the preseason, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan remained adamant he wasn't simply going to let an NFL-caliber quarterback go. Shanahan and general manager John Lynch followed through Saturday when they opted to keep Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard. That decision apparently came after Lynch took trade calls on the backups. "In the last week, there was a lot of interest," Lynch said. "That position to us is one that you set a price on and you stay firm on it. We never deviated from what that price was for us and nobody ever met it." Shanahan has traditionally preferred to keep two quarterbacks, but with Garoppolo coming off a torn ACL and still having plenty to prove as an NFL starter, the depth is welcome. If something happens to Garoppolo, having two more quarterbacks experienced in Shanahan's system makes for a solid piece of insurance. -- Nick Wagoner

The Seahawks are adding Jadeveon Clowney, a 26-year-old Pro Bowl pass-rusher, to a defense that badly needed someone else capable of getting to the quarterback. And it cost them only one of their two 2020 third-round picks, plus defensive ends Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin. The Seahawks will clear $4.1 million by trading Mingo (who might have otherwise been released) once the deal becomes official, $1.25 million by releasing defensive end Cassius Marsh and another $2.75 million by releasing Jaron Brown, who was in line for a bigger role in their receiver rotation. Seattle needed that money to fit Clowney's $16 million salary. A week ago, there was a legitimate question about whether the Seahawks could mount a credible pass rush, at least early in the season with Jarran Reed suspended for six games and Ziggy Ansah not certain to be ready. But he is on track to play in Week 1 and will have Clowney on the other end. Problem solved. -- Brady Henderson
