Owen Farrell has been pictured wearing heavy strapping as he took to the training field for the first time since suffering the injury which has rocked the British & Irish Lions' preparations for the first Test against New Zealand.

Fly-half Farrell was forced to withdraw from the 23-man Lions squad to face the Maori All Blacks on Thursday after he suffered a "grade one" quadriceps strain.

The injury is expected to take between seven and 10 days to heal, and with the first Test against the All Blacks just eight days away that has put his involved in serious doubt.

Farrell was pictured wearing an ice-pack on his injured left leg as he took part in some light passing exercises, and watched Jonathan Sexton's kicking session.

Sexton will start in the No. 10 jersey against the Maori on Saturday, with Wales fly-half Dan Biggar taking Farrell's place on the bench.

Of Farrell's injury, forwards coach Steve Borthwick said: "He'll be back as soon as he's fit and able to be back.

"Owen is an incredible professional. We've got a fantastic medical team and he'll be back on the field as soon as he's physically able.

"They'll monitor that on a daily basis, and we'll get updates on a daily basis.

"If you want any more detail on that you'll have to ask [head coach] Warren [Gatland] when he's next up."
